Best Trails in Richmond (For Walking, Running, and Getting Outside Without Leaving the City)
One of the most underrated parts about living in Richmond?
You’re never that far from a really good trail.
Whether you’re trying to get steps in, go for a run, or just clear your head for a bit — there are so many options that don’t require a full day trip.
Here are a few of the go-to trails people keep coming back to:
Buttermilk Trail
If you want something a little more active.
This one is:
- more rugged
- great for trail running or hiking
- right along the river in parts
It’s one of those trails that actually makes you feel like you got a workout in.
North Bank Trail
A favorite for a reason.
You’ll get:
- elevated views of the James River
- a mix of shade + open overlooks
- a trail that feels a little more relaxed than Buttermilk
A good balance of scenic + doable.
Belle Isle trails
More than just the bridge.
Once you’re on the island:
- you can loop around pretty easily
- hop between rocks near the water
- or just walk and take it all in
This is a great “start here” option if you’re newer to Richmond trails.
Forest Hill Park trails
A little quieter, a little more tucked away.
Perfect for:
- slower walks
- less crowded paths
- feeling like you’re out of the city for a bit
Pony Pasture Rapids Park
Easy, accessible, and still really scenic.
You’ll find:
- flatter trails
- quick access to the water
- space to just hang out if you want to stay awhile
A Quick Note About Richmond Trails
If you spend enough time on them, you’ll notice:
- some are more intense than they look
- some are way more peaceful than expected
- and most of them connect in ways you don’t realize at first
It’s one of those things you kind of figure out as you go.
So… Why Does This Matter?
Because this is a huge part of what living here actually feels like.
It’s not just:
- homes
- neighborhoods
- or where you work
It’s being able to:
- decide last-minute to go for a walk by the river
- have your “go-to” trail depending on your mood
- feel like you have space — even in the city
If you ever want trail recommendations based on where you live (or where you’re thinking about moving), I’m always happy to share what people actually use day-to-day.
