A Local’s Guide to the James River (Where to Go, What to Do, and What to Know)

by Mary Soroka

One of the best parts about living in Richmond?
You don’t have to go far to feel like you’ve completely stepped out of the city.

The James River runs right through it all — and once you start exploring it, you realize how many different ways there are to enjoy it depending on the day.

If you’re new to Richmond (or just haven’t fully taken advantage of it yet), here’s a simple guide to getting started:

Belle Isle

Probably the most well-known spot — and for good reason.

You’ll get:

  • easy access from downtown
  • walking trails + historic ruins
  • some of the best skyline views in the city

It’s a great “start here” if you’re new to the river.

Texas Beach

A little more tucked away, but worth it.

This is where people go when they want:

  • a quieter, more local feel
  • space to spread out
  • that “hidden gem” energy

It’s a bit of a walk to get there, which is kind of the point.

Pipeline Walk

If you’ve never done this one - it’s an experience.

You’re literally walking along a pipeline in the river with:

  • unreal views of the skyline
  • water rushing right next to you
  • a perspective of Richmond you don’t get anywhere else

(Not for anyone who hates heights… but very cool if you’re up for it.)

Pony Pasture

More relaxed, more space, and great for an easy day outside.

Perfect for:

  • hanging by the water
  • bringing friends (or dogs)
  • not having to hike too far to enjoy it

This is one of those spots people go back to again and again.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

Richmond locals will tell you this quickly:

  • The river changes — always check conditions
  • Water levels matter more than you think
  • Some spots are calm, others are not

A little awareness goes a long way in making sure it stays a good experience.

So… Why Does This Matter?

Because this is a huge part of what living in Richmond actually feels like.

It’s not just neighborhoods - it’s:

  • deciding last-minute to go sit by the river
  • having your go-to spot depending on your mood
  • feeling like you have an escape without leaving the city

That’s something a lot of people don’t fully realize until they’re here.

If you’re thinking about moving to Richmond (or even just exploring it more), I’m always happy to share the spots locals actually use - not just the ones you’ll find on a quick search.
